When Ruby woke up on
her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming
enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police.
Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government
“rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease
that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have
emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot
control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.
When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living

THOUGHTS:
This book is now officially my absolute favorite book! The book does a really good job of capturing the setting, which is a post-apocalypstic world on Earth. Earth was overcome by a disease/virus that only targeted children. Children who had this virus were placed in camps, in order to prevent more outbreaks and curing them. This is what the government said, but in reality they are keeping the children to prevent them from using their powers; which was gifted to them from the "virus." The main character Ruby is one of these children, who has these powers. I love Ruby, because she seems fragile and insecure, but she is actually strong because she has these awesome powers. Also, I see a lot of potential as a character to grow out of her frail shell. HOWEVER, I most importantly love who a a girl can handle herself, especially if she has SUPERPOWERS!!!! I suggest you pick up this book! It is a knuckle-gripping book. You would be rooting for the character along the way. You get to know the character and understand where they are coming from. If you love adventure, romance, and ass-kicking girl protagonist, this is for you.
p.s. I know many people compare this book to Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. There are some resemblances, but I wouldn't say it is all alike (besides its set in an apocalyptic world and children/ teens are fighting against the government). I HIGHLY recommend you to go buy this book
2nd book is coming out in October 2013 - Never Fade
